Chocolate Toffee Bars Recipe
One of my favorite things about fall, is that we have more of an excuse to get together with our families, and since I love baking, I always offer to bring dessert when we have a family function. Fall is the prefect time to experiment with new recipes, like this delicious chocolate toffee bars recipe!
My homemade chocolate toffee bars recpie is part Heath Bar, part chocolate, part butterscotch, and 100% awesome.
My daughter and I came across a Gooey Toffee Bars recipe on a bottle of Crisco vegetable oil and decided to try our hand at creating a chocolate toffee bars recipe with our own little twists.
We subtracted the nuts (there are so many kids out there with nut allergies that we omit them in most recipes now, just in case she wants to take them to school to share with friends) and added cocoa to the crust.
We also added a layer of butterscotch chips!
These homemade chocolate toffee bars are perfect for family gatherings, or to make with the kids on one of the many days off during the holiday season!

Chocolate toffee bars
Yield: 24 bars

2/3 cup shortening
2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 & 1/3 cup all purpose flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1 1/3 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup toffee bits
1 cup butterscotch chips
Preheat your oven to 350 and spray a 13 x 9 inch baking pan with a non-stick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine shortening, brown sugar, egg and vanilla and beat at medium speed until fluffy. Stir in flour, salt and cocoa powder until thoroughly combined.
Pour into your greased pan and cook for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with butterscotch chips, then return to oven to cook for 2 minutes. Remove from the oven and using the back of a spoon, spread the melted chips evenly over the crust. Add your chocolate chips and return to oven for 2 minutes, then spread evenly with the back of a spoon as well. Add your toffee bits and let cool for 15 minutes, then cut into bars.
